What are the two ways that alleles can be expressed?

Alleles can be either dominant or recessive. Dominant alleles are always expressed - even if there is only one copy present - that is it can be heterozygous or homozygous. Recessive alleles are only expressed if an individual has two copies, and doesn't have the dominant allele - that means it has to be homozygous.
