Describe the process of phagocytosis

So Bacteria and other pathogens are too large to enter a cell via diffusion across the cells membrane so instead white blood cells will engulf them. This is essentially what phagocytosis is and cells that do the eating are called phagocytes ( makes sense!) The process is quite easy to remember especially if you draw some diagrams when revising !The PHAGOCYTE is attracted to the pathogen ( like bacteria) because the pathogen releases chemical products. The PHAGOCYTE fuses with the pathogen The PHAGOCYTE engulfs the pathogen and forms a vesicle ( little pocket with the pathogen inside ). The pocket is called a PHAGOSOMELysosomes in the PHAGOCYTE will fuse with the PHAGASOME and release enzyme to break the pathogen down into smaller soluble piecesThe soluble pieces are absorbed into the cytoplasm of the PHAGOCYTE . So as you can see a lot of the words look very tricky but if you remember PHAGOcytosis , you can remember PHAGOcyte and PHAGOsome as well!
