The question is asking for your opinion - there is no right or wrong answer Ensure to mention that all principles are important and interdependent The main criteria for the question is giving an example of your chosen principle and explaining why it is important. 1. Acknowledge that there are 4 ethical medical principlesAutonomy BeneficenceJusticeNon-maleficence 2. Choose one principle and explain what it means Autonomy - giving the patient the ability to make their own decision and be informed about their careBeneficence - to always act in the patient's best interestJustice - to treat everyone including patients and colleagues equally Non-maleficence - to act in a way that does not harm patients3. Give an example of having seen one of these principles in the medical profession (e.g. something you have seen in work experience) or in your own life (something you have done that will enable you to act well as a doctor) and explain how such a principle is important in medicinee.g. During my work experience I witnessed a doctor patient conversation that enabled the patient to have autonomy. They were informing the patient that they had gallstones and would need laparoscopic surgery to remove the gallbladder and stones. The doctor explained the full procedure, side effects and post operative care and ensured that the patient completely understood by allowing them to ask any questions they had. This meant that the patient had made an informed decision when agreeing to have the surgery. Autonomy is very important in medicine as it allows for a good doctor patient relationship to be formed where the patient can trust their doctor and is able to be more involved in their care.
