How do I structure a 40 mark essay answer?

The key things to remember in writing our essay are clarity, relevant case studies and having a clear line of argument throughout. To do so, we'll want to start by breaking down the given essay question. Using a red pen, circle the key words. "Discuss the view that urbanisation in both the developed and the developing world is unsustainable."From this, we now know the focus for our essay: it is a discussion, meaning we need to present arguments from both sides and evaluate their relative merit to draw our conclusion; it is about urbanisation in the developed and developing worlds, giving us the focus for our case studies being in both, and the key words we will need to define; and its concern is the sustainability of urbanisation, which gives us our direction for making our argument. In the introduction, we'll define the key words given in the question: urbanisation, sustainability and the difference between the developed and developing world. We'll then set out the structure for our essay in three points - what we'll argue in each section - in about 3 sentences. We'll conclude the introduction with a sentence summarising our key argument and the conclusion we expect to meet. The essay will then follow the structure set out in this introduction: point one, point two, point three, and then a conclusion. It is important that each point made is supported with case studies, and that throughout your essay these are drawn from both the developed and developing world. Points should also be made both for and against urbanisation being unsustainable in both, depending upon your argument. It is important to present a clear conclusion, summarising the points you have made and the argument thence reached. This conclusion should also open up the essay to any broader implications, or points of further interest, to show an understanding beyond the limits of the given topic.
