Briefly discuss the multi-store model of memory and its individual components.

The multi-store model of memory consists of three main components; the sensory register, short-term memory (STM) and long term memory (LTM). This model of memory states that memory flows in a single, linear direction. The multi store model encodes visual, acoustic and semantic information. There are 3 main components to the multi store model of memory.
The sensory register encodes sensory information such as echoic(sound) and iconic. The capacity of the sensory register is very large yet the duration is milliseconds. Information from the sensory register flows directly to the short term memory where this information is encoded visually and acoustically. The capacity of the STM is 7+/- items at a time with a duration of 18-30 seconds. This information is stored in the long-term memory store semantically and via the rehearsal loop. The LTM has an unlimited duration and lifetime storage capacity.
