Sophie accidentally puts her hand on an open flame, she immediately withdraws her hand. This is an example of a reflex reaction. Describe how a reflex reaction is coordinated.

Reflex reactions are subconscious, they bypass the brain. Receptors detect a sensory stimulus, in this case- pain. Receptors stimulate sensory neurons, creates an electric impulse which travels to the spinal cord- "ow pain!!"Sensory neuron then synapses with the relay neuron- "we need to stop the pain!"The relay neuron then synapses and passes the signal to the motor neuron- "move your hand!" the motor neuron sends this signal to the effector (in this case, the muscles in the hand requiring it to be moved). The hand then moves away from the flame.
