When performing in a naturalistic role, understanding your characters' motives are key. Stanislavski believed that actors should settle comfortably within the role that they are playing and consequently derived two ideal exercises to aid actors in accomplishing a believable character. I would use both the 'Magic If' and Stanislavski's 'Given circumstance' to help myself become more aware of how to perform naturalistically. To use the 'Magic If' I would record questions my character is asked during the play and answer then in my theatre journal or out loud. As I become more confident in the role I will ask my peers to question me on more difficult questions (perhaps even those not directly connected to the play) to ensure I felt completely comfortable within my role. I would also use the 'Given circumstance' ; putting myself into a specific environment to explore how my character will behave. For example, I may set the scene as at night, possibly affecting me mentally and physically. It may affect my mood or how cold or warm I am. Both of these techniques will allow me to become more comfortable within my role and able to perform it more naturalistically. It will also increase my confidence of being my character on stage, leading to a more refined and powerful performance.
