To what extent was Mary Queen of Scots reign defined by her marriages?

(This is a brief plan for how I would answer this essay question)Intro: The main things that define Mary Queen of Scots reign was her marriages, her religion and with her relationship with Elizabeth I and her eventual execution. Paragraph 1: Throughout Mary's childhood, both her mother and her regent (the Earl of Arran) were constantly arranging engagements for her. I would talk about her childhood in france and her 1st marriage to Francis, and its consequences for her reign, including a scholarly source for evidence.Paragraph 2: Mary's return to Scotland and her marriage to Lord Darnely and subsequently the birth of their son but immense strain on Mary's rule. Darnley murdered her secretary in front of her whilst she was pregnant. Perhaps Mary wanted to marry a second time was because of her religion. Being catholic, Mary was brought up to believe that a woman's role was to be a dutiful wife, despite her also being a Queen. This is where Mary's religion gets in the way of her being a good Queen. Paragraph 3: Again, Mary's third marriage could only have been a good idea to Mary because she was catholic and thought she needed to be married. it is said that before they were married, Bothwell raped her and she fell pregnant. She miscarried twins only weeks after they were married. This could be another reason she felt she needed to marry, so that she wouldn't be seen to have a baby out of wedlock. Paragraph 4: the other thing Mary is known for is her turbulent relationship with her cousin, Elizabeth I. After Mary left Scotland, Elizabeth had her imprisoned and after years of tolerating her catholic cousin and her threat to the English throne, Elizabeth used the Babington Plot to have her tried and executed. Conclusion: Mary's reign wasn't completely defined by her marriages, but they did play a large role in how we analyse her reign today.
