Explain how material deprivation can cause class differences in educational achievement.

Material deprivation refers to children who lack the material items to succeed in education, such as books, computers and educational toys. Children who are materially deprived are often from working-class families, who lack the disposable income and economic capital (Bordeiu) to properly invest in their children's education. Working-class families for example may be unable due to financial constraints to buy revision books and materials for their children, which may negatively impact on their exam performance. On the other hand, middle-class families are able to afford the material items to help their children's educational success such as buying a computer to help with extra schoolwork. This therefore results in a divide between working-class and middle-class children, based on who can afford certain material goods and who can't. This divide results in class differences in educational achievement, where middle-class children often outperform working-class children.
