Discuss the positive economic impacts of migration on the host country

Migration is a complex process which has an array of impacts on both the host and origin country. The modernist viewpoint on migration highlights how economic migrants can aid overall development of the host country. The host country is the location where migrants move to and their relocation can have both positive and negative impacts on the given host country. Migrants fill low skilled labour jobs which not only benefits the host countries economy but also improves the standard of living for individual migrants. Additionally, the rising availability of non-farm work in developed countries such as the UK enables migrants to work in the white collared job sector, boosting the national economy. Migrants can also work in jobs which are in demand within the host country, such as carer jobs, which relieves the pressure of caring for an ageing population. This also means that the population of the host country can fill higher skilled job roles and work for longer due to them not having to care for elder relatives. Migrants pay tax to the host country, and in 2014 in Italy taxed paid by migrant workers have contributed to the cost of 600,000 pensions for the Italian population. This sustains the economic strains of an ageing population. It is important to consider that there are both positive and negative impacts of migration on a host country, however the economic impacts are largely positive. As long as the individual migrant contribution to society is not exploitive, the economic opportunities within a host country is a pull factor for a better quality of life. This also impacts and can boost the host country economy.
