How does temperature affect enzyme activity

When the temperature increases the activity of the enzyme increases, up until the optimum temperature. This is because increase in temperature, increases the movement of the molecules and so there is more chance of the enzyme and substrate colliding and forming an enzyme substrate complex. Once the temperature passes the optimum temperature, the activity decreases and eventually the enzyme will become denatured. Denaturing is a permanent change in shape of protein molecule, meaning the substrate will no longer fit in the enzymes active site. The optimum temperature for enzymes in the human body is around 37 degrees.
