State three ways in which the body will respond to hot temperatures.

An acceptable answer would include any of these: - Nervous and hormonal systems carry signals to skin, liver and muscles. - Erector muscles relax and hairs lie flat to reduce insulation. - You sweat a lot (containing salt and water). The sweat then evaporates (by using heat from blood as latent heat of vaporisation) to transfer heat from your skin to the surrounding environment. - Vasodilation of arterioles and pre-capillary sphincters occurs which is where blood vessels close to the surface of skin dilate (widen) so that more blood can flow near the skin’s surface and extremities so in turn, more heat can be released to surroundings through radiation. - Sebaceous gland – releases sebum (oil) to moisturise skin too. - Decrease in thyroxine or adrenaline so no increase in metabolism. - May also be an increase in surface area to allow increased rate of heat loss. - Less respiration takes place in the liver so less heat is released in the body. - There are fewer contractions of skeletal muscles so less heat is generated in the body.
