Explain why there were challenges to the Weimar Republic in the years 1919-1923 (12 marks) You may use the following in your answer: The Treaty of Versailles, The Kapp Putsch. You must also use information of your own.

Introduction - State which three reasons you will discuss in order to answer this question (The Treaty of Versailles, The Kapp Putsch and one other factor, e.g. Hyperinflation) As no marks are given in this question for judgment, a line of argument is not required. Paragraph 1 - The Treaty of Versailles. Follow the PEEL structure. You need precise and accurate knowledge to support your view, for example, limits on military forces, how much land Germany lost (13% of its European territory), and how much Germany was required to pay in reparations. This must be clearly linked back to why this caused challenges to the Weimar Republic, for example by explaining the 'stabbed in the back' theory, which blames politicians for Germany's defeat, and the humiliating terms. Paragraph 2- The Kapp Putsch. Clear description of key events, as the mark scheme asks for a coherent line of reasoning, you need to explain why certain events were so significant to the government's stability, for example the government was forced to leave Berlin, as General Luttwitz had been able to seize control and declare a new government, showing the Weimar Republic as weak and unstable. Paragraph 3 - Hyperinflation. Relevant information on why this caused further unrest, for example savings becoming worthless, people being unable to afford food. Link back to the question - people blamed the Weimar Republic for this, as they had printed more money to pay reparations, causing hyperinflation. Germany's population therefore had less faith in their government’s ability to effectively deal with problems.
