What is the significance of the title in Ishiguro's "Never Let Me Go"? - How to answer this essay question

It is good to make a general plan for this question, to sort out and understand it, so if it is to come up in the exam it is much easier to answer it. Therefore a mind map, detailed essay plan, and potentially an essay should be the resulting product of this question by the student.Umbrella questions might seem very daunting, especially one that brings up the main themes of the play. An easy way to tackle these is to break down exactly what the question is asking and based on that come up with 3-5 ideas you would like to talk about and further develop them into an essay plan What is the question asking: "Never Let Me Go" is the title of the novel The word "significance" just means why "Never Let Me Go" is the title? and why is it important? The question is just asking why the title of the novel is "Never Let Me Go" and why is it important in relation to the themes and plot of the novel Overall Idea: Actually answer the questionThe title is never let me go because it is the connection between the students that Ishiguro exploits to convey the unfairness of the students. This connection is shown through the desire to let go of each other. Therefore they reflect the main theme of the novel: The unfairness of the world of the play and as a result our own world. Ideas: You can then brainstorm 3-5 ideas of why you think the title is "Never Let Me Go"It is most helpful to do a mind map and further develop these ideasThese have to be specific ideas, however they can have a wide scope, for instance:When Kathy dances to the song "Never Let Me Go" (a specific passage)The students have a collective memory and identity (greater theme)Tom and Kathy's relationship (greater plot point)The inevitability of death/Completion (Greater Theme)Deferrals and Possibles (Greater Theme Why?: Choose the ideas that are most relevant/you can develop best and ask why they important.Kathy Dancing to "Never Let Me Go" --> Passages gives the title, brings forth idea of the clones' forced destiny with Kathy's interpretation and the idea of the new and unfair system of the clones in Madame's interpretation. These are the main themes that Ishiguro exploresKathy and Tommy's relationship --> They search for the cassette tape together in Norfolk, refuse to let go of each other is example of love. Explore love, emotion and forced destiny. Greater themes of novelCompletion --> the fact that their destiny is to die makes them hold onto each other, forced destiny which is a greater theme Further Development: Have a main point / Analyse the quotes that link back to this point / Explain how they answer the questionse.g. Completion The lurking threat of completion makes the student hold on each other and form a link that proves that they do have a soul and are humans. This creates pathos and conveys the unfairness of the world of Ishiguro and as a result our world.-Use of the word "Completion" in the idiosyncrasy of clones which conveys that dying is the goal of their lives-"Hoping that none of us would let go" A reference to the title, said in part two as the characters start to lose the connection. The verb Hope suggests emotion and the collective pronoun "None" shows this connection, the two combined create pathos and are used to prove their humanityBoth quotes are used to prove the humanity and soul of the clones and the unfairness of the system which is what Ishiguro is trying to prove. As a result the feeling of "never letting go" between the students" is one of the key tools the author uses to convey his main themes and uses it as a title Structure: Decide an overall structure -it is best if the paragraphs build to a larger point rather being just individual paragraphs1.Tom and Kathy 2. Dancing passage 3.Completion
