How does negative feedback work?

Negative feedback is one of the ways the body maintains homeostasis. Homeostasis describes the body maintaining set internal conditions- for example the level of certain hormones in the body is kept in a narrow range. If the level of hormone increases beyond this set range sensor organs in the body can detect this increase. They can respond by reducing the amount of hormone produced - negative feedback- so that the level of hormone falls back into that set range.
