How do I structure an essay comparing similarities and differences between two poems?

Firstly I am going to talk about some key elements we want to ensure we are incorporating into our essays: Sophisticated structure: the easiest way to achieve this would be to interchangeably address similarities and differences throughout, rather than listing all of our similarities, followed by all of the differences Make sure you comment on key aspects of poetry, this may include: language, form, structure, poetic devices, tone Always include quotations to support your point; pick them wisely and avoid using long quotations. Pick the most interesting parts which include language techniquesComment on the effect certain structure/ language will have on the listener and discuss the purpose of the poem Example structure: Introduction: Main body- Paragraph 1: State a similarity between the two poems- eg: do both poems evoke a similar tone? Include a relevant quotations which supports your point for both poems Explain the effect of the similarity, what could this suggest to a listener and what might the poet have intended to convey? Main body- Paragraph 2- State a difference between the two poems- eg: do the poets create different imagery in the two poems? Include relevant quotations from poem A and poem B- identify language techniquesExplain the effect of the difference- is it helpful in alluding to two different messages behind the poems? Main body- Paragraph 3- State a similarity between the two poems in terms of the structure Include relevant quotations from the two poems demonstrating a knowledge of structure: eg do both poems use rhyming couplets? Explain the effect of the structure in both poems- does it help convey a similar theme and what is the effect of this? Main body- Paragraph 4- State a difference between the two poems in terms of the structure/ form: eg does the stanza length differ? Include relevant quotations which support this Explain the effect of this and why might the poets have chosen to use different stanza lengths- what effect could this have on the listener? Does it evoke a different tone? Conclusion- sum up the main similarities and differences and suggest why might the poets have used the same/ different techniques- good chance to show the examiner you understand the poets intentions/ suggested meanings behind the poems
