This statement has up to a point validity in providing an answer to why Germans may have voted for the Nazi Party. It is true to say that Germany was suffering from an economic Depression when Hitler came to power, and those in support of Hitler liked to portray him as a man who was able to rescue Germany in it's time of need. Hitler was able to use the effects of the Depression to create popularity for himself, providing perceived solutions to the problems. Hitler noticed that if he was able to be the voice of answers, people who were suffering as a result of the depression would do anything to get out of it and so his popularity would grow. People within Germany were hungry, unemployed and desperate. Nazi propaganda created by Joseph Goebbels, showed Hitler as Germanys saviour known as The Fuhrer Cult. However it is would be naive not to mention the intrigues of President Hindenburg and Von Papen and their subsequent advisers, and their role in placing Hitler in power. Hindenburg and Von Papen needed a solution to their own problems and a way to break the on-going political deadlock and seen Hitler as someone they could control once they placed him in power. They appointed him as Chancellor in 1933. Hitler then went on to gain more support and eventually by 1934 he was in complete control of Germany. The Depression gave Hilter and the Nazis the ability to rise to power but also the inherent weakness that was within the Weimar system of government, allowed for Hindenberg and Von Papen to facilitate Hilter's rise into power.
