What is oxidation and reduction?

Reactions can be explained in terms of loss and gain of electrons. Oxidation is Loss of electrons and Reduction is gain of electrons. When electrons are lost oxidation number increases, whereas reduction leads to a decreased oxidation number.The acronym OIL RIG can be used.
