Describe the multi-store model of memory

The multi-store model of memory (Atkinson and Shiffrin, 1968) suggests that information from the environment initially enters sensory memory, which includes senses such as vision and hearing. If this information is attended to, it will enter short-term memory (STM). This information will remain in the STM for 30 seconds unless it is rehearsed. STM has a capacity of between 5 and 9 items. If rehearsed sufficiently (known as maintenance rehearsal), the information will pass to long-term memory (LTM). The LTM has a potentially limited capacity and duration. The model also assumes that information can only be retrieved from STM.
