What is a stem cell?

A stem cell is an undifferentiated cell that can differentiate into specialised types of cells such as muscle cells or skin cells. A stem cell can give rise to many cells of the same or different types of cell. As an embryo, we are comprised of stem cells that differentiate into multiple types of cells that have a specific function.
