Describe the role of a neuron

A neuron, or a nerve cell takes up, processes and transmits information using electrical and chemical signals and is a basic component of the nervous system. Information is gathered through a process known as neurotransmission. Neurotransmission is where neurotransmitters are released from the axon terminals, from the previous neuron, (known as the 'presynaptic neuron') and are then bound and react with receptors on the dendrites of the receiving neuron (the 'postsynaptic neuron'). Gathered by dendrites, the neurotransmitter travels through the axon hillock and along the axon to the axon terminal where the process repeats until the action from the brain has been delivered.
