The heart is made up of two pump systems: right and left, each side contains an atrium and a ventricle making up a total of 4 chambers. The left ventricle wall is thicker than the right as it is required to push the blood further. The main function of the heart is to supply the body with an oxygen rich blood supply. Left side:Oxygenated blood returns from the lungs via the pulmonary veins into the left atrium. As the atrium contacts blood is pushed into the left ventricle through the mitral/bicuspid valve. From the ventricle blood is ejected into the aorta through the aortic valve. This blood then supplies the body.Right side:Deoxygenated blood from the body via the inferior and superior vena cava enters into the right atrium. As the atrium contacts blood is pushed into the right ventricle through the tricuspid valve. From the ventricle blood is ejected into the pulmonary trunk through the pulmonary valve. This blood travels to the lungs where it is oxygenated before returning to the left side of the heart.
