Answer: In the structure of the above presented paragraph we can easily observe the high amount of rhetorical questions, such as :"Where were the officers and the crew?"; "What were they doing?"What was it?"; "Was it the collective scream of humans and animals protesting their oncoming death?" Was it the ship itself giving up the ghost?". Therefore, their presence may be interpreted as a way of inducing the reader in the same state in which the character is finding himself : in a difficult and challenging situation. By adding this type of sentences, the confusion of the character increases its manifestation through the stream of consciousness that is slowly developing in his mind. Another aspect which definitely helps constructing this scary situation is the way in which the author manages to use the stylistic devices in order to create the most relevant descriptive environment for a general state of fright: this way it is worth mentioning the existence of onomatopoeia and personification: "The ship shook and there was that sound, the monstrous metallic burp. What was it? Was it the collective scream of humans and animals protesting their oncoming death?";"I clearly heard monkeys shrieking.". At this particular point, the senses of the character are completely disturbed by all the sounds and movements which happen in the dark, creating a great uncertainty .
