How do I structure an essay?

Each person has a different writing and presentation style when it comes to essay writing, but if you are really struggling with structure, I found this technique to work for me. For example, if the question is "How does Priestley explore the importance of social class in An Inspector Calls."Introduction - This is where you set up your argument. Use the subheadings of each paragraph to build your introduction and state that those are the areas of the essay that you are going to focus on. Paragraph 1 - Setting / what the play is about in relation to the question For this maybe reference where they live, the time era (1912 just before the war), and the class of the characters. Paragraph 2 - 1 opinion about the question ... i.e how the older generations in an Inspector Calls reacts to the death of Eva and what that says about social class. For this I would focus on Mr and Mrs Birling. Paragraph 3 - A different opinion about the question ... i.e how the younger generation reacts to the death of Eva and what that says about social class. For this I would focus on Gerald and Shelia, as they have two opposing views. If you have time, then maybe reference Eric. Conclusion - This is where you are concluding your argument, so what did you learn? What do you now know that you didn't in the introduction? This is a rough outline of what I did for my GCSE's and A-Levels. Now the structure for paragraph 2 and 3 (and sometimes 4) changed dependent on the question, but the rules for each paragraph I tried to keep the same.
