Describe the process of atherosclerosis within blood vessels. (6 marks)

The endothelium is damaged, this triggers inflammatory response and white blood cells accumulate. This causes chemicals and cholesterol to arrive at the area, forming a fatty deposit to form called an atheroma. Calcium salts and fibrous tissue form plaque on the inner wall of vessel This causes a decrease in artery elasticity and high blood pressure.High blood pressure causes damage to the atheroma, which initiates blood clotting, leading to thrombosis.
