To what extent do socialists have conflicting views over how the economy should operate?

Go through how to structure an exam question like this. The introduction should state what the overarching view of socialism over the economy is and clearly state your opinion whilst recognising the counterarguments. Make sure you know exactly what the question is asking you. Who are the socialists that are covered in the course, and what are there differing views over the economy? Vital to make an essay plan prior to writing! This question requires the evaluation and assessment of whether socialists largely agree or disagree over the economy. Make sure to drill how FAR you agree or disagree with question 'to what extent' - shows nuance and bring students up the mark scheme. Points for this question can include: Look at different socialists and how similar/different their arguments are. Revolutionary socialists such as Marx and Engels view on how the economy should be managed includes that capitalism installs a 'false consciousness' and therefore must be abolished, compared to revolutionary socialists like Rosa Luxembourg. Examine both the similarities and differences here and come back to your judgement. Then look at social democrats such as Anthony Crosland compared to revolutionary socialists and see how far their differences and similarities go and link back to judgement. Perhaps look at third way socialists like Anthony Giddens and compare them to social democrats. Make sure to encourage students to link everything back to their judgement and the question in order to keep relevance. Try to also encourage students to use real and up to date examples when looking at ideological questions as well.
