WHY WAS THE YEAR 1923 SUCH A CRISIS FOR GERMANY?

1923 HAS OFTEN BEEN CALLED THE 'YEAR OF CRISIS' FOR GERMANY DUE TO THREE FACTORS - THE INVASION OF THE RUHR, HYPERINFLATION AND THE MUNICH PUTSCH. EACH OF THESE FACTORS UNDERMINED THE WEIMAR GOVERNMENT AND HIGHLIGHTED HOW FRACTURED POSTWAR GERMANY ACTUALLY WAS.THE INVASION OF THE RUHR - AREA OF LAND BETWEEN FRANCE AND GERMANY - GERMANY DEFUALTED ON THEIR 1922 REPAYMENT OF THE 33 BILLION DOLLARS THEY HAD TO PAY THE ALLIES AS A RESULT OF THE TREATY OF VERSAILLES. FRENCH AND BELGIANS DEMANDED REPAYMENT BUT WERE NOT GIVEN IT - LED TO FRENCH AND BELGIAN TROOPS OCCUPYING THE REGION AS A RESULT ON THE DEFAULT OF TIMBER AND COAL DELIVERIES. THIS CAUSED A HUGE BLOW TO THE GERMAN ECONOMY AS THE LOSS OF RAW MATERIALS MEANT PRODUCTION STOPPED, MEANING LESS GOODS TO SELL AND SO UNABLE TO PAY REPERATIONS. LED TO ACTS OF CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE AND PASSIVE RESISTANCE IN THE RUHR AREA - APPROXIMATLEY 130 GERMANS WERE KILLED. THE INVASION OF THE RUHR WAS A REASON FOR HYPERINFLATION
