Has the West mis-perceived Islam?

Arguments in support of Westerners misperceiving Islam:1.  Fox News stating that Birmingham was an 'All Muslim' city - a clear example of misperception. Other media examples (e.g. on "Sharia courts" in Britain which are unsubstantiated)2. View of the veil as oppressive - that might be incorrect as many Muslim women ( have written about it being empowering.3. Seeing Muslims as a threat to Western ways of life, when in fact they are closely aligned to some traditional Western values e.g. the family. Can also discuss Islam as a religion of peace (acceptance of diversity in the Qur'an's references to "the people of the book", etc).4. For advanced students, one could talk about Huntington's "Clash of Civilizations", and why his ideas aren't widely accepted in the academic community. (e.g. the interplay between civilizations and the possibility of avoiding a fundamental confrontation)Arguments again Westerners misperceiving Islam:1. Islam has been seen through a national security lens and in some cases this can be justified by a threat from the extremist fringes, e.g. Islamic State, Al Qaeda etc2. Shariah law can be restrictive and accompany the oppression of women, for example the restrictions in Saudi Arabia.3. Interfaith dialogue - the accuracy of the perception depends on who in the West we are talking about, some may see as essential to the community (e.g. Justin Welby's warnings on hysteria in the wake of terror attacks, the work of organisations like the Quilliam Foundation).
