What makes a good personal statement?

A good personal statement is one which explains clearly why you want to study your chosen subject. It should explore some of the topics within the subject that you find most interesting or that you want to find out more about. First, you can explain what got you interested in the subject. Did you study the subject as part of your A-Levels? Was it from something you heard on the news? Was it from an interesting book that you read? State what it was that sparked your curiosity about the subject and what you learnt. Then, use this event which made you interested to develop how you learnt more about the subject at hand. For example, you may have learnt about a fascinating subject during your A-Level or GCSE studies. To develop this, you read a book linked to this topic or got work experience around the topic. Use these developments to form a chain and the structure to your personal statement. Once you know what topics and experiences you are going to talk about. You want to make sure that you write about them in a coherent and concise manner, as the personal statement is limited to 4000 characters! For every paragraph throughout the personal statement, you should state 1) What did you do? Book/Work experience? 2) What did you learn from this? 3) How does this link to the course you are studying?
