Explain how a catalyst works to increase the rate of reaction

A catalyst will provide an alternative route for the reaction with a lower activation energy by allowing reacting molecules to bind to their active sites. In addition, a catalyst will not be used up in the reaction, so an individual catalytic molecule can catalyse several individual reactions. These factors enable the catalyst to increase the rate of reaction.
