“Is what is holy holy because the gods approve it, or do they approve it because it is holy?” - Plato. Outline the problems associated with Plato’s Euthyphro Dilemma.

1) Divine Command Theory
An action is right or wrong if and only if it is commanded or forbidden by God
The Problem: An Arbitrary GodIf this is the case, then it follows that God could command murder, or adultery, and that would be right by virtue of it being commanded by God. The fact that the rightness or wrongness of actions rests solely on an arbitrary decision is problematic. While an action such as murder would not be wrong if God commanded it, intuitively this goes against our common-sense understanding of right and wrong. However, this suggests our value of things as good or bad is independent of God’s commands. This leads us to the second problem.
2) God commands right because it is right
God and ‘rightness’ are distinct from one and other
The Problem: This goes against our traditional understanding of God as essentially good.If we judge actions such as murder as good or bad independently of whether God commands them, this implies an independent quality of rightness. This is problematic given the traditional understanding of God as essentially good.
