What is a place? 4 marks

A place is a space which people have an attachment to. It have three key concepts. Location indicates exactly 'where' a place is, eg coordinates. For example, Glastonbury is in Somerset and is 23 miles south of Bristol. Locale refers to how a place is shaped by the people, cultures and customs within it. For example, Glastonbury in the home to: Glastonbury Tor which is a spiritual site; quirky independent shops; and Glastonbury Abbey which brings with it the legend of King Arthur who is buried there. The last key concept is 'sense of place' which is developed through experience and reflects emotional/ subjective attachment. For example, Glastonbury's spiritual importance gives a very different sense of place to the Glastonbury Festival which takes place on Worthy Farm.
