When using verbs in le passé composé (Perfect tense) how should I know which verbs take the avoir-form and which take the être-form?

When you are constructing verbs in le passé composé, most verbs will take the avoir form (eg. J'ai écouté) but some verbs will take être (eg. Je suis allé). The verbs that take être can be remembered using the acronym DR & MRS VANDERTRAMP:D - DevenirR - RevenirM - MonterR - RentrerS - SortirV - VenirA - AllerN - NaîtreD - DescendreE - EntrerR - RetournerT - TomberR - ResterA - ArriverM - MourirP - Partir
