How do you test for the different halide ions?

Add silver nitrate solution to the solution containing halide ions. Chloride ions will form a white precipitate (silver chloride). Bromide ions will form a cream precipitate (silver bromide). Iodide ions will form a yellow precipitate (silver iodide). The precipitate can then be confirmed using ammonia solution. Silver chloride redissolves in dilute ammonia solution to give a colourless solution. Silver bromide redissolves only in concentrated ammonia solution to give a colourless solution. Silver iodide does not redissolve upon addition of dilute or concentrated ammonia solution.
