How can I bring my controlled assessment work up to an A-grade?

In both writing and speaking assessments, you need to ensure your content has good flow and ticks certain boxes that the examiner is looking for - for example have you used the correct form of the past tense, and conjugated it properly? However, there are certain devices you can use to really wow the examiner and push up your grade. My favourite tip to offer students is to somewhere include the subjunctive tense in your Spanish work. It is often considered a difficult tense and is not usually taught at GCSE, however there are some really useful subjunctive tense triggering phrases that show off your knowledge. A good example:

¡Es una lástima que el subjuntivo pueda ser tan difícil!

It's a shame that the subjunctive can be so difficult!

Acabas de volver de un intercambio escolar y te das cuenta que has perdido algo de valor en la casa donde te quedaste. Escribe una carta a la familia. Debes mencionar: -lo que has perdido -dónde crees que lo has perdido - por qué es importante.

How do I know when to use preterit or imperfect tense?

Translate the following passage into Spanish: When I was young, I used to visit my granddad every Friday. One day, I visited him with my mum. We drank coffee and watched the football. There isn't much to do in my granddad's house.
