Why are ethnic and racial minorities better represented in the House than in the Senate?

The creation of majority-minority districts has enabled African American representation to rise in the House.

The President is able to use gerrymandering to create districts represented in the house that will represent certain sections in society. For example Alabama District 7

Division of congressional districts so a majority of residents from racial minorities have increased membership in the house.

The senate is seen as more prestigious

Elections are seen to be more contested by well known politicians. Due to the system of governing, African American politicians have less name-recognition as some of the more experienced politicians.

For example, there are currently 43 representatives in the House who are or African American heritage and only 1 African American member in the Senate (Tim Scott)

Cost - The cost of running a senate campaign is much higher than that of a House campaign

e.g. in 2010 the average House run cost $1.5 million and the average Senate run cost $9 million

Due to the institutionalised disadvantage of African Americans they are less likely to be backed by donors as than white Americans. less likely to have their own personal wealth / higher risk factor associated with their chances of being elected hence less likely to attract large doantions / PACS
