What is the difference between por y para?

Para

1) 'in order to' + infinitive.

EXAMPLE: Voy a la biblioteca para leer un libro (I go to the library in order to read a book)

2) destination

EXAMPLE: Durante las vacaciones, voy a ir para Valencia.

3) for/to

EXAMPLE: tengo un regalo para ti

EXAMPLE: tenemos que hacer algunos deberes para la semana próxima

Por

1) idiomatic expressions

EXAMPLE: por supuesto

2) gratitude and apology

EXAMPLE: gracias por la ayuda

EXAMPLE: lo siento por el disorden

3) to mean through, or along

EXAMPLE: andamos por la biblioteca

If you learn when to use para you can assume that por is to be used on the other occasions!
