In my opinion, there are 6 things you should keep in mind whilst writing an English Essay.
Throughout you should present a coherent, well structured argument. As obvious as it may sound, try to keep your line of argument as clear as you can for the examiner. This will ensure they understand the points you make.
You should always try and start each paragraph with a 'Topic Sentence'. This will tell the examiner what you are going to discuss in every paragraph.
Ensure you use and analyse quotations – linking, grouping connecting them with different texts if you can. When using quotations you should keep in mind language, structure, form, tone, imagery and theme. You can use these to strengthen what you can say about each quote. Each paragraph should include 2 deep analysis' of quotes.
Also needed is a high engagement of critical references. This could be to reiterate your opinion or you could use this as a starting point to argue against.
It is important to include meaningful links to context. This must be relevant to the point you are trying to argue, for example bringing in references to the authors life which links to a character could be a good point.
Always link back to the question. This will ensure that you aren't going off track, and that the examiner can follow what point you are trying to make in regard to the specific question.
