What is the pluperfect tense?

This tense is used to express something that had happened before something else. It is commonly used in nachdem clauses. You create it by using haben and sein in the imperfect tense, plus a past participle of the verb. An example of this would be "ich hatte gesprochen", meaning "I had spoken".
