Outline the processes and consequences of soil degradation (6)

The first thing I notice about this question is that up to 6 marks can be offered. That probably means they are looking for 2 soil degradation processes with detailed explanation of the consequences. [Alternatively, they might require 3 processes with only one example of a consequence, but they would specify that]. Process number 1 is deforestation. How does it happen? - tree cover removal by cutting down trees. What is the consequence? - wind and rain causes soil erosion as there is nothing holding it in the ground. Process number 2 is overgrazing. How does it happen? - allowing livestock to graze excessively on one piece of land. What is the consequence? - fewer plants in the ground allow the soil to be easily washed or blown away. Both of these processes may lead to desertification. If you can’t think of any processes, remember that soil degradation is the ‘decline in the quality or quantity of soil’ - what causes the soil to diminish or the soil’s humus to become less fertile?
