2. Do I need a maths tutor?
If you’re unsure about whether your child needs a tutor or not, the best thing is to have a chat with them about it. You can also discuss it with their teacher to get a clear feel for how they’re doing and where they might need some more help.
If you’re unsure how your child would respond to tuition, it’s worth arranging a trial session so you and your child can meet a tutor. This is a great way to get a feel for how weekly lessons would work, and your teen can talk to the tutor about what they’d go over each week too.
3. Do Maths tutors help?

4. How do I find a Maths tutor?
Finding a tutor is simple. If you use an online platform, just search for the subject, level and price range you need, see which tutor you’d like to try, and then message them to arrange a first meeting. After that, if they’re a good match with your child, you can then work out a weekly slot (or more) for your lessons.
You can also find tutors through word-of-mouth, if any of your child’s friends have had a good tutor who they recommend. Their school may also know of some good tutors who could help your child.
When looking for a tutor, a good rule of thumb is to find someone two education levels more advanced than what they’ll be teaching. So for an A Level Maths tutor, for example, it’s best to find someone at least in their second year at university studying Maths, if not beyond.

When prices are in the triple figures, by contrast, the tutor is often a qualified teacher, tutoring mainly in central London.

The average price for a GCSE tutor in the UK is £32, but prices range from £10/hour up to more than £50 and even £100/hour.
Tutors generally increase their prices in relation to how highly educated they are (whether to Undergraduate, Masters or PhD level), and then also how experienced they are as a tutor. Often, qualified teachers work as part-time or full-time tutors, and they are able to charge more because of their experience. Examiners or retired examiners have also typically worked as higher end tutors.
University students and recent graduates can make excellent tutors. Because they’re closer in age to kids at GCSE level, they can be much more relatable and good at empathising with what teens are going through. As they have sat school exams in the past few years, they’re up-to-date with curriculums and pass on their exam techniques to their students. They tend to charge less than average too, and prices for student tutors go from around £18/hour.
7. How much is an A-Level maths tutor?
The average price for an A Level tutor in the UK is £36. This is a bit more than a GCSE tutor as it requires the tutor to have a higher level of Maths education themselves.
