Hi, my name is Amelia, I am studying for a Masters and have recently completed a degree in Natural Sciences at Cambridge University, specialising in Genetics. I really enjoy tutoring and have been gaining experience tutoring different age groups for over five years. I tutor Maths, Biology and Chemistry from Common Entrance to A level. I am excited to take on some new students and to impart the enthusiasm I have for the biological sciences; I often find it effective to relate a certain scientific concept to its current application in the wider field. I think that academic confidence is one of the most important outcomes of tutoring, especially in the sciences, and I intend to build my student’s confidence by establishing a deep understanding of each topic. By understanding the purpose behind a calculation or a process, it is easier to apply a similar logic in an unfamiliar situation, as required by the exam. Hi there! I’m a graduate with a passion to see young people achieve their best potential. Having volunteered within education from literacy workshops, education outreach at university, being an academic mentor in Maths, I learnt I just enjoy sparking confidence in others, their abilities and interests - whatever they may be. I’m a firm believer that STEM is for everyone and with the right environment and support you can build confidence in your abilities to tackle challenging concepts. STEM can be really hard. You’re not alone in your frustrations, completing both my degree and A-levels in Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry and Physics, I completely understand the frustration when things don’t seem to click. With that in mind my primary goal with tutorials is not that you get everything right straight away but to equip you with the skills and tools to help tackle problems, which when strengthened lead you to where you need to be. As a tutor I care about you learning holistically, meaning embedding knowledge of subjects across different topics. It can be really difficult to learn topics when they feel segmented but seeing how things weave together lets you see the bigger picture and understand your curriculum better. You deserve to be as best possibly equipped when facing your education and it would lovely to come alongside you to both guide and cheer you on as you go through the process.

I don't like the word lesson, it implies lecturing. A more apt description for my sessions would be a conversation. A constant back and forth between the student and I where the fundamental cause of misunderstanding it rooted out, and addressed. This approach enables the student to fully understand the why. What you fully understand, you don't forget. The other core principle of my tutorship is plenty of exam style questions. Maths is not a spectator sport, and the quickest way to get better at it, is to do it. I am very good at pinpointing exactly why a student misunderstands a certain topic, or maybe even a certain detail. In spite of this intense approach to learning, the tone of the session is very much a relaxed one. I can guarantee the hour will fly by!
