A kettle has a 55% energy efficiency. The input energy for the kettle is 378,000 J per boil. Calculate the amount of energy dissipated in 5 boils.

Energy used for one boil = (3.78 x 105 / 100) x 55Energy used for one boil = 2.079 x 105 J Energy lost per boil = 3.78 x 105 -2.079 x 105Energy lost per boil = ...

You have a layer of glass with a refractive index of 1.5 and the glass is surrounded by air. A light ray shines into the glass and Total Internal Reflection occurs at the glass-air boundary. What is the critical angle?

This question tests your knowledge of Snell's law, Total Internal Reflection (TIR) and the fact that the refractive index of air is 1 (which should be memorised as it is in the exam). The critical angle i...

What is the critical angle of a beam of light leaving a transparent material with a refractive index of 2?

Total internal reflection occurs only when light travels from a medium of high refractive index to a medium of low refractive index. This is the case for our problem (glass to air boundary, n=2 and n=1 re...
