I want to study Modern Languages: what do I put in my personal statement?

There is no set model for a Modern Languages personal statement; it varies depending on your interests, the content of the degree courses and whether you're starting a new language or not. Of course, however, for most courses there are key points to cover, such as pinpointintg your main area of interest in that language (is there a personal connection? Did you fall in love with Spanish on one particular trip? Have you never been to the country but are hooked by a certain aspect of their culture?) and proving that you have explored the language and culture beyond your school curriculum.

It is really helpful to have someone (such as a tutor) to bounce ideas off and who can help you explore the most important motivating factors behind your choice of degree course. Admissions tutors see tonnes of personal statements, so trying to guess what they want to read is not a good idea as it will end up sounding generic; what will stand out is one that is genuine and personal.
